Washington, DC – On December 12, 2013, Syrian Center for Political and Strategic Studies Executive Director Dr. Radwan Ziadeh and Syrian Expert House members met in Turkey with a large number of Syrian lawyers and judges to discuss the recommendations of Syria Transition Roadmap, a document recently published by SCPSS and the Syrian Expert House detailing the Syrian opposition’s vision of the post-Assad democratic transition in Syria.

Members of the Free Syrian Lawyers Association, the Syrian Judicial Council, and the Civil Council of Syrian Lawyers all attended the meeting in which they extensively discussed with Dr. Ziadeh means for restoring the rule of law in the liberated areas of Syria, Syria’s post-conflict constitutional reform process, and the role of lawyers and judges during Syria’s political transition. Additionally, Dr. Ziadeh, who has recently been appointed head of the Transitional Justice Commission for Syria, outlined his plans for beginning transitional justice programs in the liberated areas and establishing a special tribunal in Syria for conducting post-conflict investigations and prosecutions.

Also Dr. Ziadeh met with different representatives of the Free Syrian Army in Idlib and on the Syrian-Turkish border. They discussed means for building support among the opposition for Syria Transition Roadmap and ways of implementing the report’s recommendations, despite difficulties, including the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in the liberated areas of Syria.
