Syrian opposition presents report for political transition

The Syrian opposition has unveiled a proposed “roadmap” to achieve “national reconciliation and justice” in the conflict-torn country.

The 233-page document has been drawn up by a group of about 300 Syrian human rights activists, academics, judges, lawyers and opposition figures. It covers topics ranging from constitutional, political and electoral reform to security, economic reform, and transitional justice in post-war Syria. The report calls for a government with both a president and a parliament to provide checks and balances, and recommends creating an independent judiciary.

Under the plan, a new national assembly would draft a constitution based on an earlier one written in 1950. The Syrian National Coalition says the aim is to rebuild Syria, and create institutions for a civil and democratic society in which pluralism prevails. Senior members of the Syrian opposition say the roadmap lays a solid foundation for the “Syrian revolution
